  • Middle East Festival, 5 - 18 March
    Edinburgh will be hosting a major festival on the Middle East from Friday 5 March – Thursday 18 March 2010 Events will include workshops and lectures covering the different spiritual traditions that were born in the region, the environment, and the arts. Amongst the distinguished speakers are the Keeper of the Botanic gardens and the playwright, David Greig. For full details click here....
  • Siege of Leith Show - 21st March at 7pm - entry free
    Citadel Arts Group are putting on a free reading of their Siege of Leith Show on Sunday 21st March at 7pm at the Out of the Blue Drill Hall, Dalmeny Street Entry is free and it promises to be a great evening. The Siege of Leith in 1560 saw Leith caught up in a struggle for power between England, France and Scotland. The full production will be staged at the Leith Festival in June.     Scottish coastal rowing reaches NewhavenThe Scottish Fisheries Museum, Anstruther, started an initiative to rekindle coastal rowing in Scotland, with the intention to re-introduce inter-community rowing around the Scottish Coast. Until the 1950s it used to be a popular pasttime using locally constructed craft. In Shetland and in Cornwall the sport has already had a huge resurgence of interest in recent years with regular regattas taking place. One major consideration was to ensure that the entry into the sport is relatively inexpensive.     Citadel Arts GroupCitadel Arts Group is a small professional theatre company with long-standing Leith connections and a strong record of working with communities. Their latest production ‘What Women Want’, about the Scottish suffragettes, was seen at the Edinburgh Fringe this summer. Another recent project was a tour of special schools and youth centres in Leith, which was funded by the Leith Neighbourhood Partnership. They’re currently seeking funding to produce a play about the 1560 Siege of Leith. This is to coincide with the 450th Anniversary of the Siege next year.     Hospital grounds to be used as community gardensNHS Lothian is intending to develop the idea of community gardens for use by people with learning disabilities and psychiatric patients. The grounds of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital have been suggested as one site. To read NHS Lothian's briefing document, click here. The idea is not new.   • Freegle - an alternative to Freecycle - free giving, locally, easily
    Edinburgh is part of a new online re-use network called Freegle formed in the UK as a friendly alternative to Freecycle. Freegle's sole objective is to enable individuals to 'do their bit' by keeping household goods out of landfill by giving away things they don't want, to people who can use them. This will be a truly grassroots co-operative run by and for local people.
