Mark calls for renewed progress on nuclear disarmament
Mark has joined with other MPs in calling for progress on nuclear disarmament and the establishment of a nuclear weapons convention to bring about a total ban on nuclear weapons. He has signed a Motion which calls on all governments to move forward on ending the use of nuclear weapons at the Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference this coming May in New York.
'We need to make it clear that we want real progress on nuclear disarmament at this year’s Conference.
Nuclear disarmament may not hit the headlines in the way it once did but the threat of nuclear warfare has not gone away. And even though we have fortunately moved beyond the nuclear stand-off in Europe, in many other parts of the world nuclear tensions have risen.
We should grasp this fresh opportunity to further the cause of peace and move towards a world free of nuclear weapons.'
In the Queen’s Speech the Government committed itself to creating the conditions for worldwide nuclear disarmament and also announced an important step forward in disarmament of conventional weapons with the Cluster Munitions Bill which will ban the use of cluster bombs which kill or injure innocent civilians.
